There are no shortcuts in culinary arts training to make you an accomplished chef.  For chefs in the food industry to advance, they must acquire training, work experience, and the ability to complete more responsible and refined tasks. An essential component in becoming an accomplished chef is completing a culinary training program with an accredited school or institute recognized by professional associations or universities.   Accreditation is a rigorous process for any school; it imposes standards of excellence, codes of practice, and assurance of fee security.

It is usually mandatory for executive chefs and head cooks working in prestigious restaurants to have several years of experience and training. Most chefs receive the necessary training by attending independent cooking schools, professional culinary institutes, or colleges with 2 and 4-year programs to obtain a hospitality or culinary arts degree. The majority of formal training programs mandate students participate in some kind of apprenticeship, internship, or out-placement program that are mutually offered by the school and associated restaurants.

Even though various curriculums differ, students in accredited culinary training programs spend a fair amount of time in the kitchen learning and practicing how to prepare meals and use the proper equipment.

A good basic culinary arts training program provides a fundamental education in culinary arts in modern foodservice, culinary terms, basic nutrition, culinary techniques and kitchen management  A professional culinary program curriculum provides education in safety, hygiene, and sanitation procedures that are necessary regardless of the kitchen you are working in.
